HORWICH St Mary's Victoria had a nightmare start as they went down 3-1 to Bury GSOB in one of only four matches played in the Lancashire Amateur League.

It was touch-and-go right up until kick-off at Buckley Wells Pitch with the rain making conditions difficult for both sides.

Danny Holmes' side found themselves 1-0 down after five minutes when goalkeeper Joel Trickett dropped the ball after a cross into the box and Bury took advantage of the error.

Bury doubled their lead as another cross into the box caused problems and the hosts scored.

The visitors had a couple of chances before the break with a Tom Whittle headers and then Ross Crompton hitting the bar but the home side enjoyed their two-goal cushion at the break.

Vics picked themselves up and pulled one-goal back 15 minutes in when the ball fell to Lewis Haydock and the 17-year-old fired into the back of the net.

Horwich continued to hunt for an equaliser but as they poured forward and were caught at the other end as Bury put it beyond Vics with another goal.

Holmes said: "The conditions were bad and we were lucky to get a game on as the pitch was very heavy.

"Before the game we were short and brought a few lads in from the reserves such as Lewis.

"We made two defensive mistakes early on and fought back.

"We never got going and were not up for the second ball but I was disappointed it was 3-1."
