SOME of the area's brightest cycling prospects were at Bolton Old Links Golf Club recently for the Bolton Hot Wheels annual presentation evening.

Jordan Stanworth, who started his career at the club was on hand to hand out the trophies and gongs and the event was well attended with lots of very talented riders vying for awards.

The golden girl of the night was Melissa Boylin, who went away with the most improved girl (racing) and riders' rider of the year awards for 2015.

Boylin is a popular member of the club and is very likeable for helping the younger members to improve and develop.

In action, she won the North West League at under-14s level and club officials gave her the most improved gong as she has done so well this season.

She is currently doing winter training sessions and will be hoping her results continue to impress.

Ben Horrobin sealed the outstanding achievement award for his commitment to helping youngsters progress.

Like Boylin, he get on well with the juniors but has been in competition with his dad Martin during some races this season.

In terms of his performances, Ben has beaten some of his personal best times.

The most improved girl from the Hot Wheels juniors Bolton Arena sessions was Neve Laycock and has come on a lot this season.

Her coaches insist she listens well and puts what she has learned into practice.

The top boy from the Arena sessions was Joseph Williams.

Even though he was not there on the night to pick up the award, he will be given the title soon.

This season his speed and technical ability have come on leaps and bounds and deservedly take the title.

Ethan Grimshaw was named most improved boy in racing for his great displays this year.

Nicknamed 'The Noise' Grimshaw lives and breathes cycling and you cannot tire him out.

He has tremendous skills and can do a track stand (where riders just balance keeping the bike up and standing on the pedals for a long time) even though he is only 10.

The track racer of the year was Benjamin Peatfield.

He did extremely well in the North West League this season and finishes either first or second in each race he competes.

He is very quick which has earned him the nickname of 'Mini-Cav' after speed-king Mark Cavendish.

He has grown up very fast and even when he has been the youngest in his age-group has been really competitive with the top riders and then the following year has been on the podium.

It was a great night for the Peatfields as his brother Isaac also picked up a title.

He won the off road racing award and is another up-and-coming star coming through the ranks.

Isaac has proved to be a really good mountain bike rider and is very competitive.

After winning several events it led to him picking up the title in the NW U14s League.

Club coach Alan Stubbs said: "It was a great year for the club and the evening was well-attended.

"We held it at a new venue (Old Links) and that went really well.

"We are hoping for even more success next year and there will be more people picking up awards.

"The club have lost a few of our older members such as Joseph Peatfield and others who have moved to local clubs Horwich and Lancashire Road Racing Club.

"We are very proud of them after the leave the junior ranks with us but we have a lot of parents now joining to compete.

After the ceremony, the children enjoyed a disco and party games.

Spot prizes were also given for events that had happened through the year. e.g. Isla Glossop – most spectacular fall, Shaun Laycock - most times crashing through the tape, Martin Horrobin – bike wrecker (he damaged three bikes in one cyclo-cross race).

The club boasts lots of talented and committed kids and the next day 15 riders and quite a few parents took part in Round 11 of the Lazer North West Cyclo Cross League at Stadt Moers Park, Knowsley.

Luckily the sun came out and the rain stayed away for the races but once again it was muddy.

Melissa Boylin finished third U14s girl, while Benjamin Peatfield was second U14s boy and Isaac Peatfield took third in the U16s boys category.

A further group of six riders, including Neve Laycock, one of last night's winners attended the British Cycling regional track cluster session at the National Cycling Centre Velodrome.

It was a very busy and varied weekend but it shows how Bolton Hot Wheels encourages riders in all cycling disciplines.
