FIVE Burnden runners took to the hills around Todmorden for the re-arranged Red Hot Toddy 10K with two just missing out on category wins.

Lesley Fisher was the 10th female runner to finish with a time of 48min 01sec earning her second place in the F55 section.

Simon Marland was close behind, coming second in the V55 category and 62nd overall out of the 201 finishers in 48:29.

The race was postponed from Boxing Day after heavy flooding hit the Calder Valley.

The course consists of two laps of Centre Vale Park, followed by a single hilly lap of rural and town centre roads.

There were 219 metres of climb with the highest point just before halfway on Todmorden Edge, before the long descent back into Todmorden.

Don Nichol was third V60 in 100th place with his time of 53:57. Dave Pearson came through unscathed and even had enough for a sprint finish to record a time of 58:43. Sue Blackman completed the Burnden quintet posting a time of 65:26.

Jackie Oakes led home the club’s contingent at a windy Southport in the Mad Dog 6 10k, posting a time of 49:37 in extremely tough conditions.

Neil Critchley was next in 52:37, with Richard Lord on his heels, coming home in 55:19.

Emma Walker (57:04) and Debra Hennessey (58:26) were the other members to dip under the hour mark with Gemma Chapman just missing out with a time of 60:54. Dawn Evans (1:06:01) and Susan Rushton (1:17:39) completed the Burnden turnout.

Sarah Sutcliffe was Burnden’s sole representative at the Blackburn Winter Warmer 10k, a testing course round Witton Park with a monster hill thrown into the mix.

Sutcliffe battled her way to a time of 52:29, knocking 25 seconds off her East Lancs Hospice mark two weeks ago.
