EX-WANDERERS striker Shola Ameobi has joined League One Fleetwood on a deal until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old had been without a club since his contract at the Macron came to an end last month.

Ameobi had offered to play for nothing but was unable to sign another registration with the Whites because of the terms of their transfer embargo.

He had trained at Euxton for the last couple of weeks before linking up with the seaside club, known affectionately as the Cod Army, who boast within their executive ranks former Whites favourite Gretar Steinsson.

Fleetwood boss Steven Pressley was looking forward to getting the experienced former Newcastle United man on board.

β€œHe is not only a very good player; he is a terrific character that can bring a lot to the group.

"It is vital that he has been playing as sometimes unattached players at this stage in the season, the one thing they are lacking is a level of fitness.

"Shola has been involved at Bolton Wanderers on a regular basis for the vast majority of the season and he is raring to go.”

Ameobi made 10 appearances for Wanderers, scoring on his debut against Leeds United and in his final game against MK Dons.

He made 312 appearances and scored 53 goals during his 14-year stay at Newcastle, which came to an end in 2014, before a brief stint in Turkey and a loan at Crystal Palace.
