THERE will not be a minute’s silence before today’s game between Brighton and Wanderers to mark the death of former chairman Phil Gartside.

The decision has been taken by both clubs according to the wishes of Gartside’s family, although there is a large number of calls on social media for fans to join in applause during the 63rd minute of the match.

Gartside passed away on Wednesday, aged 63, after 16-and-a-half years as Wanderers chairman, and was a close ally of the Brighton hierarchy, including chief executive Paul Barber.

Momentum behind a united applause in the 63rd minute has been considerable, however, with many Brighton supporters confirming they would back a public mark of respect to the former FA board member via sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

Chris Hughton, the Brighton manager, also added his own note of respect in the build-up to the Championship clash.

“Everyone here at the football club sends their condolences to Phil’s [Gartside] family,” said the former Newcastle United and Birmingham City boss. “I met him on numerous occasions at games and he was always very good company and it was a shock to hear.”

Around 600 Bolton fans are expected at the Amex Stadium, 477 of which have bought their tickets in advance, with seats also available on the day.

And though there are mixed feelings among the support on whether a round of applause is the right, or even most respectful gesture, Wanderers’ club chaplain Phil Mason believes its’ spontaneity could make it a fitting tribute on what is bound to be an emotional day at on and off the field.

“I think that would be great if that was led by the fans and the people, and not led by the club,” he said. “That would show the support that the family deserves at this time.”

It is believed Wanderers are not currently planning a minute’s silence before their next home game against QPR next Saturday – which is also at the behest of Gartside’s family.

Funeral details will not be made public although the club is looking into organising a memorial service at the Macron Stadium at a later date, which would be open to supporters and guests.

More details are likely to be made available nearer the time, and a tribute is also being planned in the match-day programme.
