THE Bolton Golf Association were in top form at Old Links on Sunday when they met the East Lancashire Golf Association for their early season bi-annual friendly match.

The Bolton squad took the honours 10½-1½ leaving the ELGA team in disarray.

The morning foursomes saw Bolton take all four matches and almost come up with a whitewash in the afternoon singles.

Team Captain Bill Bromilow said: “It was a pity that ELGA had to switch some of their team members at short notice but we were unstoppable on the day and gave us a good workout before we go to Sheffield on May 8 when we meet our old foe away at Doncaster Town Moor.”

Following the 4-0 whitewash in the foursomes, Bolton set off with their only loss in the eight singles when ELGA’s Anthony Harwood, from Blackburn, beat Liam Ball 4&3, but after that it was Bolton all the way.

BGA secretary Mark Latham produced a solid 5&4 win against Chris Nuttall which was followed with a 2-up margin by Josh Ashton against stand-in Martin Brooks of ELGA.

However, Jack Brooks, a one-time regular Lancashire junior, held on to share a half against Bolton’s Anthony Stirling.

Old Links member Steve Bryan ran out a 4&2 win against Gary Byrne and Aaran Harper brought home a 3&1 win against Sean Nicholls who featured in the Lancashire boy’s in his youth.

Great Lever’s Joe Whittaker was just too strong for opponent Adam Fothergill of Nelson who lost 5&4, while Whittaker’s club-mate, Ashley Williams, took care of the final game beating ELGA’s Luke Ormerod 3&2.
