PHIL Parkinson admits Wanderers have to get their skates on in the transfer market after his squad’s injury problems intensified yesterday.

The Whites could be without six first-team regulars for their final pre-season friendly at home to Preston North End on Saturday.

Gary Madine (hip), Zach Clough (hamstring), Jamie Proctor (groin), Dorian Dervite (knee) and Derik Osede (hamstring) are all nursing knocks, while Mark Davies was also withdrawn from contention on Tuesday night to avoid the risk of injury.

Dervite will almost certainly miss the start of the season after aggravating a long-term knee issue, which after the departure of Rob Holding last week leaves Wanderers down to just two fit, contracted centre-halves in Mark Beevers and Alex Finney.

With that in mind, Parkinson wants an answer from chairman Ken Anderson on whether he can offer a permanent deal to David Wheater, Neal Eardley or Danny Collins, who have been on trial in the last couple of weeks.

Parkinson does not have long-term concerns over the other players currently sidelined but with the League One kick off against Sheffield United just 10 days away, the Wanderers boss says the queue for the treatment room underlines the urgency of getting some signings made in the next couple of days.

“The time has come for me to sit down and discuss what we need right now with the chairman because the season is drawing ever closer,” he said. “We need to make decisions and bring those extra players in.

“We are discussing things on a daily basis. He is away at the moment working on the best way to take the club forward but I have a constant dialogue.

“The staff knows, the chairman knows we need players in to make us stronger.

“There are good signs and the lads here have been excellent but we do need to strengthen soon.”

Parkinson was pleased with what his team produced in defeat against Burnley, where he experimented with a five-man midfield and a style designed to hold the Premier League outfit.

“I thought there was a good structure about us,” he said. “We gave everyone a job to see whether they could take it on and I was really pleased with what I saw.”
