BOLTON Golf Club will give people an opportunity to have a go at the sport on Saturday.

The sample session is part of a nationwide campaign to get people involved in sport on the back of Great Britain's success in the Olympic Games where Justin Rose won gold for Britain in the golf competition.

The Lostock golf club event is open to non-golfers and beginners of all ages as well as established golfers.

Beginners and non-golfers will be given a demonstration by the club's professional team before taking part in a golf session with equipment provided.

Established golfers will play nine holes on the short or championship course and golf attire is recommended, while both groups will be able to try out the club's indoor golf simulator.

Booking for the 'I Am Team GB' initiative, which has inspired thousands of the nation's clubs to open their doors to new participants, must be done in advance by contacting the club's director of golf Ian Orrell on 01204 843073.

He said: "Sport brings communities closer together and we are immensely proud at Bolton Golf Club to be part of this nationwide celebration of sport.”

The club's membership committee chairman, Ron Hopkins, said: "Bolton Golf Club is one of Lancashire's oldest, friendliest and most prestigious golf clubs, hosting both the Lancashire ladies' and men's championships.

"One of its former members, Harry Whittle, was a European and Olympic athlete. Harry competed in the 1948 London games and was captain of athletics in the 1952 Helsinki games performing in the long jump and 400 metre hurdles. Harry sadly died in 1990 and his wife Thelma is still an active member of our club.

"We are committed to providing first-class facilities to members of all ages and standards from the absolute beginner to the top amateur golfer. Our open event is an opportunity for novices or accomplished golfers to come and see what golf and Bolton Golf Club are all about."

The event takes place between 2.30pm and 5.30pm.
