A major motorway is experiencing heavy delays after a lorry caught on fire.

The M56 is currently closed in both directions after a lorry fire between junction 14 for Hapsford and junction 12 for Runcorn.

There are huge delays and lanes are closed in both directions.

National Highways North West spokesperson said: "The M56 in Cheshire is closed eastbound between J14 (Hapsford) and J12 (Runcorn) due to a lorry fire.

"Emergency services including North West Motorway Police are in attendance.

"National Highways traffic officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.

"Traffic is currently held on the westbound carriageway to assist emergency services in attendance."

Cheshire Police are also in attendance and urged drivers to avoid the area.

A spokesman said: "The M56 is currently closed in both directions between J14 (Hapsford) and J12 (Runcorn) while emergency services deal with a HGV fire.

"Please avoid the area and follow any signed diversions. Check @HighwaysNWest for updates."

Cheshire Fire are on the hard shoulder putting the fire out.

A spokesman said: "We are currently dealing with a fire involving a heavy goods vehicle on the hard shoulder of the M56 Eastbound between junctions 12 and 14.

"Please avoid the area if you can."

Traffic is being diverted via the solid diamond diversion symbol.
